A transient who was fatally attacked on the South Side early last month has been identified as William Edgar Ferguson, 57.

Ferguson's name was withheld until Tuesday because authorities were attempting to contact his family but were unsuccessful, said Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

Ferguson was killed April 13 after witnesses called 911 to report that three men were attacking Ferguson near East Ajo Way and South Palo Verde Road, Hanke said.

When deputies arrived, they found the man dead from injuries, Hanke said.

No arrests had been made Tuesday night, Hanke said.
