PHOENIX — Gov. Janet Napolitano has withdrawn the name of her candidate for director of the Department of Veteran Services, an appointment that opened up last year after revelations of poor conditions at the state veterans home.
Gregg Maxon, a retired National Guard brigadier general, was named interim director of the agency in March 2007 after the resignation of Patrick Chorpenning. At the time, the department was reeling from a critical inspection by the Department of Health Services of the state home.
Now Maxon, 55, wants to go back into retirement, a spokesman for the agency said Monday.
"He has a lot of family issues he wants to look at and take care of," said Dave Hampton, citing a new grandchild and aging parents.
Maxon will serve through July 1. Napolitano has yet to select a replacement, said her spokeswoman, Jeanine L'Ecuyer.
