A Tucson teen who police said shot one officer and stabbed another during a domestic-violence dispute Sunday afternoon is now facing three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Travis O'Neal Hylton, 17, was booked into the Pima County jail Monday after he was released from the hospital where he was being treated for a gunshot wound inflicted by an officer.
The incident began around 3 p.m. in the 1500 block of East Prince Road. Police gave the following account Monday:
Hylton broke into a house where his sister was taking care of Hylton's 14-month-old child. Hylton does not have legal custody of the child and was not allowed to be at the residence.
When officers Edward Boyen and Dawn Paglinawan arrived, they found the sister outside and were told that Hylton was barricaded inside with the baby.
The officers forced the door open, and a fight ensued.
Hylton was able to get Boyen, 34, down onto the ground and was straddling him when he pulled out a knife and stabbed Boyen three times.
Paglinawan, who grabbed the child, saw her partner being stabbed and as she held the child, she fired once at Hylton, striking him in the shoulder.
Paglinawan was attempting to get herself, the child and Boyen out of the house when Boyen told her that Hylton had his gun.
As they ran out of the residence, Hylton followed, firing at them, but he missed.
He then went back inside and tried to escape through a back door but encountered other officers, including Officer David Friedman, 23. He shot Friedman once in the leg using Boyen's gun.
Friedman fired back four times but did not hit Hylton.
Sgt. Randy Palmer, who responded to help Friedman, moved his patrol car to protect the officer until he could be taken to a hospital.
Hylton ran away but was found hiding in a nearby yard.
It was determined that Hylton fired all 15 rounds in Boyen's gun, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Since 2000, Tucson police have had nearly 100 contacts with Hylton, resulting in more than 50 arrests, Pacheco said. The reasons for the arrests were not immediately available.
Friedman has been released from the hospital, but Boyen is still hospitalized and is working on recovery, Pacheco said.
Paglinawan suffered a minor arm injury and has been temporarily placed on another assignment, which is standard police procedure.
Friedman has been with the Police Department since last July, while Boyen was hired in February 2000. Paglinawan was hired about 2 1/2 years ago.
Hylton is being held in lieu of $750,000 bond.
According to Arizona Daily Star archives, in 2005, Boyen shot and killed a man who carjacked a woman and then robbed a bank in a matter of 14 minutes.
