The Solano Fire in the Baboquivari Mountains expanded to 2,000 acres by Sunday morning, a state forestry official said.
The fire started Friday about seven miles south of Kitt Peak on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation and was burning mostly on Bureau of Land Management land near the Baboquivari Wilderness Area.
Because of the lack of water in the area, state forestry officials are using air tankers to drop water directly on the fire in an attempt to arrest its growth, said Bill Watt, a spokesman for the Arizona Division of Forestry.
Watt said the state's Type 2 Incident Management Team, which took over control of fighting the fire, is bringing water tankers, fire rescue teams and medical personnel to the area to help.
The fire is not threatening any structures, but Watt said fire officials are concerned about two areas — the northbound and southbound flanks of the fire — because they are the fastest-growing. The fire, however, is not close to anything but wilderness at this time, he added.
