Sheriff seeks murderer who burned crime sceneTucson, Arizona | Published: 05.12.2008
When and Where: July 17, 2006, in the 11400 block of South Cherokee Lane, near South Sierrita Mountain Road and West Scotland Street.
The Victim: Norma Jean Jay, 59.
Investigator: Detective Theresa Hess, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Summary: Jay was found stabbed to death in her burning Three Points home after someone set fire to it to cover up the killing, an official said.
The substitute teacher had suffered several injuries from a sharp-edged object, but investigators were never able to recover a weapon, according to Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.
Firefighters with the Three Points Fire District discovered Jay lying disrobed on her bed after extinguishing the blaze at her mobile home. Firefighters arrived to fight the flames about 5 a.m., according to Arizona Daily Star archives.
Whoever committed the slaying was successful in the attempt to destroy evidence of the crime, as the fire made it difficult to collect usable information, Star archives say.
Jay taught in the Three Points area and was also a beautician on the Northwest Side.
There is no known motive in the case, Hanke said.
The Latest Information: Nearly two years after Jay's death, investigators have exhausted all leads in the case and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
How You Can Help: Anyone with information about this case should call 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line of the Pima County Attorney's Office.
