I need to start today with an apology. But first, let me say IT'S NOT MY FAULT (or yours)!
On April 28, I asked everyone to e-mail me with their driving pet peeves. A week later, I issued a general admonishment because all I'd received were online comments, and no e-mails.
Turns out I was wrong.
About 100 of you responded, but your messages got caught up in some kind of electronic dead-letter box that I can't really explain.
Sure enough, at 10:40 last Monday morning — the same day my column ran — they broke free and hit my in-box en masse. So all I can say is, I'm sorry I wasn't able to use your responses last week. Many of them were great.
But obviously the information superhighway is as backed up as some of our streets and intersections.
I was going to let the driving pet peeves have some time off, but because I received so many responses a week late, I'm going to air a few more.
One of the peeves that kept surfacing in reader responses is another one of my own. Here's how Michael Harvey put it:
"My pet peeve is the high-profile vehicles that go past the stop line so I can't see the traffic. For example, I am in the right (lane) wanting to take a right. I am waiting for traffic to clear.
"Someone in a sport utility comes up on the left lane and pulls so far forward they are completely blocking my view of traffic. So now I have to wait for them to make a left before I can turn right."
Michael, those people bug me, too. The stop line at intersections is there for a reason. Stopping in a crosswalk is illegal and doesn't make the traffic signal change faster.
Gayl Woityra complains about the size of her peers on the road.
"Huge SUVs and trucks. Doesn't anybody in Tucson drive anything else? Hey folks, are you enjoying your gas bills?"
Besides just the gas bills, I sometimes wonder how the drivers of "high-profile vehicles" can even fit into a parking space, or get out of the car when they've parked.
Seems the spaces are sometimes designed for compact vehicles, and the bigger cars are on, or over, the parking space line.
And . . . one more:
"Those who stop in the middle of regular traffic flow to 'wave' a vehicle waiting into the traffic line. This is fine when everyone is stopped at a traffic light and there is space for the entrant to fit into the traffic line.
"It is not OK when traffic is moving. All the 'waver' is doing is backing up traffic for everyone else to be 'courteous' to one vehicle. Stay with the program, folks. This is seen all over the city."
That one's from Larry Lee.
I know we could go on and on and on, but I think this will wrap up the gripes for a few weeks at least.
Road Q
Question: "Last year, Pima County halfheartedly paved bits and pieces of Manville Road in Avra Valley and continues to throw loose asphalt on it periodically. However, Manville is in horrible condition and getting worse, especially the farther west you drive. And traffic using it continues to increase as more housing developments appear along it," wrote Laura Phillips.
Answer: The county resurfaced a section of the road a couple of years ago, said Priscilla Cornelio, county transportation director. But there was funding for only a short section, and the plan was to finish it the next year, she said.
Budget shortfalls, however, have left the department with less funding, and the rest of the road is not in the plan for the next three years, she said. The department will continue to repair potholes. Repairs can be requested by calling 740-2639.
