The death of a woman at a Southeast Side residence has been classified a homicide, officials said Thursday.
Deputies found the woman after receiving a call from family members who said they hadn't been able to reach her, said Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.
When they went to the house around noon in the 8100 block of South Placita Gijon, near Old Spanish Trail and South Camino Loma Alta, they found the door unlocked and a woman dead inside, Hanke said.
She had signs of trauma, although officials declined to disclose the cause of death Thursday evening.
A positive identification has not been made on the victim, but the homeowner is a 61-year-old woman, Hanke said.
Authorities are looking for the homeowner's 29-year-old son who has not been seen at the residence all day.
"We would like to check the welfare of the son," Hanke said.
Wayne Charles Phifer, who also lives in the home, may be in a 2002 silver Acura bearing Arizona license plate 373-VYE.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
A motive has not been determined for the slaying, and no suspects have been identified, Hanke said.
Hanke did not know how long the woman had been dead.
