Shooter in '06 NE Side homicide is still at large
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.14.2008
When and Where: April 21, 2006, in the 8700 block of East Bear Paw Place, near East Tanque Verde and East Bear Canyon roads.
The Victim: Joel Coronel- Gonzalez, 28.
Investigators: Detective Juan Carlos Navarro, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department homicide unit.
Summary: Coronel-Gonzalez was driving a Chevrolet Avalanche with one passenger on a Friday night on the Northeast Side, according to Arizona Daily Star archives.
A black Honda Prelude began to pursue him about 8:25 p.m., and the chase ended in a cul-de-sac in the 8700 block of East Bear Paw Place, where gunfire erupted and Coronel-Gonzalez was hit.
He stumbled to a nearby house, and the residents called 911, archives say. Coronel-Gonzalez was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The Sheriff's Department did not release any information on the reason the driver of the Honda Prelude chased the victim. Those in the Prelude took Coronel-Gonzalez's Avalanche before deputies arrived.
The passenger in the Avalanche was taken into custody by deputies, but he was released because he wasn't cooperative, and investigators determined he did not play a role in the shooting.
Coronel-Gonzalez was a Mexican national from Sinaloa, said Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman. He had a California driver's license, but his family told detectives he most recently lived in Phoenix.
The Latest Information: There are no new leads in this case.
