Andrew Molina

Tucson Region

Student of the Week: Andrew Molina

Santa Rita High School, senior
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.25.2008
Age: 18
Parents' names: Maria and Michael Berry.
Favorite class: Creative writing.
"I like that you have the freedom to express yourself any way you want, and you get to play with words and see how they flow together and how they work to get your point across," Andrew said.
Activities in school: Andrew plays flute in the Santa Rita High School Marching Band. He first picked up the instrument in fifth grade.
Activities outside of school: Andrew works at Orange Julius in Park Place mall. He also sings and plays bass in Until Her Heart Stops, a band he formed with a friend from the marching band.
Whom would you have lunch with if you could have lunch with anyone? Stephen King.
"I'd like to sit down and talk with him and see if had any advice on my writing or how to make it as a writer," Andrew said. "He's my favorite writer right now."
What books are you reading now? Having recently finished the Harry Potter series, Andrew said he just started reading "Cirque du Freak" by Darren Shan, which was recommended to him by his girlfriend.
Whom do you admire most? "My parents," Andrew said.
"Both of them have overcome a lot to get where they are now. My mom takes care of seniors, and it's really hard when they pass away, because she always becomes real close to the people she cares for. My stepdad knows how to work with anything mechanical — cars and computers — and he's taught me a lot."
What's on your iPod? Andrew doesn't have an iPod; he owns a Zune music player, which is filled with a lot of different music, but mostly rock. His favorite bands include Avenged Sevenfold, Angels and Airwaves, +44 and Demon Hunter.
Plans after high school: To attend Pima Community College for two years, then transfer to the University of Arizona to study creative writing or video-game design, Andrew said.
Dream job: Professional musician. "I want to have my own band and tour the world and have everyone know my name and my band's name and just live comfortably and be able to take care of my family and friends who will be in the band with me," he said.
Hidden talents: "I have a knack for arguing in the style of a lawyer," Andrew said, adding that he takes part in Santa Rita's Teen Court program.
"Not many people expect that I can do that kind of stuff, but I don't think many people even know my school has a Teen Court program."
Vouch: "The way today's society is, there's just so many things out there that kids can get into, and I just am so thankful that he's chosen the right path and he's doing good things," said Andrew's mother, Maria Berry. "He keeps himself busy with his music and his band and writing and reading and everything, and it helps him stay on the right path."
