The Arizona Daily Star Sportsmen's Fund Send a Kid to Camp program kicked off its annual camp drive last month with an envelope in the Star that readers could use to donate. In the first weekend, nearly 140 did so.
In addition, the J. and C. Davis Family Foundation contributed $32,000 to help send children from military families to camp this summer.
Send a Kid to Camp raises money so economically disadvantaged kids can go to YMCA, Boy Scout and Girl Scout camps, and to Camp Courage burn camp. Last year, this mission expanded to send children whose parents or guardians are in the military to the local camps for free.
The goal is to raise $200,000 to send at least 720 children from low-income households and from military families to camp this summer. So far, 187 donations totaling $43,077 have been received.
In 2007, the camp drive paid $197,708 for 714 children to go to camp. Of those, 229 were from military families.
Since 1947, the Sportsmen's Fund, with the support of Star readers, has raised money to help pay for more than 32,000 children to go to camp. The Sportsmen's Fund is one of the oldest 501(c)(3) charities in Southern Arizona.
At least 97 cents of every dollar raised goes to send boys and girls to camp.
Your contribution is tax-deductible and qualifies with the state of Arizona for a charitable tax credit of up to $400.
