When Lillian Hellman spoke before 2,500 people at the University of Arizona Main Auditorium on Feb. 21, 1978, her wit and sharp tongue were in evidence. Renowned for her plays and memoirs, including "The Children's Hour," "The Little Foxes" and "An Unfinished Woman," she was also known for her 30-year romance with Dashiell Hammett (author of "The Thin Man" and "The Maltese Falcon") and for appearing before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy era. The UA audience posed questions on a variety of topics. When asked about her well-known anger and rebelliousness, Hellman, then 72, answered: "Age wears me down. But I am angry about a great deal, rebellious still about a great deal." She died in 1984, at age 79. ART GRASBERGER /ARIZONA DAILY STAR 1978
