Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.21.2008
When and where: Feb. 12, 2006, in the 3500 block of East Benson Highway.
The victim: Alex J. Carrillo, 51.
Investigators: Detective Chris Hogan of the Pima County Sheriff's Department homicide unit.
Summary: Carrillo died three weeks after an unidentified assailant burst into his home and attacked him as he lay sleeping.
Carrillo was found dead on March 7, 2006, at a relative's house in Phoenix, where he had gone to try to recover from the serious injuries he suffered during the attack, according to the Star's archives.
Those injuries led to his death, the Sheriff's Department said.
Deputies responded to Carrillo's home on East Benson Highway near South Alvernon Way at about 10 a.m. on Feb. 12 after receiving reports of an assault, according to Star archives.
When they arrived, they learned that an intruder had broken into his house and had attacked him with a crowbar. Carrillo was able to fight off the attacker, who then left the home.
Carrillo described the man as 6 feet tall with a dark complexion, according to information released by the Sheriff's Department shortly after Carrillo died. The assailant was wearing a baseball cap, and Carrillo said he spoke English with a thick Mexican accent.
Sheriff's Deputy Dawn Hanke said no suspects have been identified in connection with Carrillo's slaying, and a motive for the killling still has not been released.
The latest information: There are no new leads in this case, Hanke said.
How you can help: Anyone with information about Carrillo's death is asked to call 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line of the Pima County Attorney's Office.
