Renowned author, speaker and counselor Hugh Prather will be the guest pastor at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church on Sunday, Jan. 6, for the religious occasion of Epiphany.
Prather, whom the New York Times has called "an American Kahlil Gibran," is most famous for his book, "Notes to Myself," first published in 1970, which sold more than 5 million copies and has been translated into 10 languages. With his wife, Gayle, Prather has co-authored 26 books.
St. Francis leaders say Prather's work underscores the importance of forgiveness, gentleness and loyalty and stresses the need for the mind to let go of destructive images and fears.
His books aim to offer tools to cleanse minds of thoughts that can sour attitudes, block intuition, tear apart relationships and undermine the purpose of lives.
Prather will speak at all three Sunday services at St. Francis that day, at 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. His sermon is titled "Chocolate: an Epiphany" and is expected to focus on bringing light into our relationships, including those with our so-called enemies. St. Francis in the Foothills is at 4625 E. River Road, on the northwest corner of Swan and River roads.
The biblical story of the Epiphany is in Chapter Two of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament.
The story says the magi — wise men — came from the East and followed the star in search of the newborn king. Because the magi apparently arrived after Christ was born, the date of Jan. 6 was adopted for Epiphany in about the fifth century.
