Brent Robert Hampton briefly made a living off of snatching women's purses this summer, and Monday morning he paid the price for his actions.
Hampton was sentenced to 90 days in jail and four years' probation for a series of purse snatchings he and his wife did this summer in the parking lots at La Encantada, the Foothills Mall and St. Philip's Plaza.
Hampton will also have to pay nearly $4,700 in restitution to the women he robbed as well as La Encantada.
His wife, Rachel Elias Hampton, was also arrested for the string of purse snatchings, and Deputy County Attorney Dan Nicolini said she will be sentenced in the coming months.
The purse snatchings — which were performed on several nights in May, June and July — were done by car. Hampton's wife drove as Hampton leaned out the passenger window and grabbed the women's purses, at times dragging the women.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Stephen Villarreal said that, considering the nature of the purse snatchings, the Hamptons were lucky none of the victims were seriously injured or killed.
Hampton's jail term will begin on Jan. 2.
