ASU asks to use $40M to fix Memorial Union

TEMPE — Arizona State University has a $40 million plan to repair and renovate the Memorial Union, which has been closed after extensive damage from a Nov. 1 fire.
A proposal submitted to the state Board of Regents for consideration this week says the work would involve repairs to the first and lower floors and renovations to the second floor to bring it up to safety and other standards. The work will include installation of fire sprinklers and alarms.
The Memorial Union is the Tempe campus' busiest building, and the closure has forced the university to set up temporary limited dining facilities in a physical-education building.
Money for the repairs is to come from insurance and revenue bonds repaid from tuition and other university income.
