Wildcat softball great and Olympic gold medalist Jennie Finch Daigle will deliver the UA's commencement address during the winter ceremony on Dec. 15.
At the University of Arizona's 137th commencement ceremony, President Robert Shelton will confer 2,554 undergraduate degrees, as well as 97 master's or specialist degrees, 216 doctoral degrees, one master's of law degree, eight juris doctorates and two doctoral degrees in pharmacy. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at McKale Center.
As a pitcher, Finch led the Wildcats to the 2001 NCAA championship and won a record 60 consecutive games as a pitcher over three seasons. She is a correspondent for ESPN and is preparing for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as a member of the U.S. Women's National Softball Team.
Finch pitched for the UA from 1999 to 2002. She was a communication major at the UA but has not received a degree.
During the ceremony, five students will receive Centennial Achievement Awards, which were established in 1984 to honor students who have "demonstrated integrity, have overcome enormous challenges to achieve a college education, and have made a contribution to self, community and family," according to the UA.
Undergraduate winners are Armando Lopez and Ruth Fesahazion; the master's winner is Phillip Stevens; and doctoral student winners are Enrique Montaño and Tracy Maria Williams.
The University Distinguished Outreach Faculty Award will go to sociology professor Celestino Fernández.
