Drugs may have been sold from the home where a 6-year-old girl was shot and killed this week, an official said Friday.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department hasn't established a motive and has not identified any suspects in Tuesday's shooting, said the head of the homicide unit, Sgt. Gary Anderson.
It appears the shooting was not random, but investigators still can't say why the home was targeted.
Several bullet holes were clustered around the front doorknob of the house.
"The placement of the rounds on the door there, certainly indicates this was not a random shooting," Anderson said.
Meanwhile, a 911 recording of phone calls related to the shooting was released Friday by the Sheriff's Department.
Two men, both under 25 and one wearing a baseball-type cap, were seen around the home near South Mission and West Irvington roads just after the shooting.
Detectives would like to speak with those men, Anderson said.
Authorities found three bullets in two rooms and two bags of a "leafy green substance" in a closet, according to a search warrant document filed by sheriff's investigators Wednesday in Pima County Superior Court.
Bullets were also found on the living-room floor, under a living-room carpet and behind a stove in the kitchen. An additional 37 rounds of .38 special and .357-caliber Magnum ammunition were found in a bag in a closet.
The leafy-green substance appeared to be marijuana, though not enough to indicate that drug dealing was going on, Anderson said.
But investigators have received anonymous tips and spoken with neighbors who said drugs were being dealt from the house, he said.
The shots rang out just before 5 a.m. Tuesday and Lizelda Monares, 27, checked on her children. Her daughter Analissa, 6, was struck by a bullet that blasted through the front door. The girl was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Two other children in the home were uninjured.
Monares declined to comment on Friday.
Monares' boyfriend, Jonathan D. Rodriguez, 21, was arrested Tuesday on an outstanding felony warrant in connection with a probation violation for weapons misconduct, said Sgt. James Ogden, a Sheriff's Department spokesman. That arrest was not connected with Analissa's death, he said.
A neighbor reported seeing two vehicles — a Chevy Tahoe and an Oldsmobile sedan — in the area about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. A passenger got out of the Tahoe and fired at the Oldsmobile before both vehicles left, the neighbor said.
Investigators don't know if that shooting is connected to the girl's death but they would like to speak with the occupants of those vehicles.
"Someone knows what happened here for sure," Anderson said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line of the Pima County Attorney's Office.Listen to the 911 tape.
