Leads sought in slaying of man on SW Side

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.03.2007
When and Where: Aug. 7, 2006, at South Cardinal Avenue and West Valencia Road.
The Victim: Carlos Marrufo, 21.
Investigators: Detective Chris Hogan of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Summary: Marrufo was found shot in the parking lot of a Walgreens drugstore at South Cardinal Avenue and West Valencia Road at about 9:10 p.m., said Detective Sgt. Gary Anderson, head of the sheriff's department homicide unit.
Deputies went to the area after hearing five to seven gunshots.
They found Marrufo on the ground outside the driver-side door of a white, four-door Chrysler sedan.
A passenger who was with Marrufo when he was shot refused to talk to investigators, Anderson said.
"It's strange that a person who was with the victim is not cooperating with us in our investigation," he said.
Marrufo was taken to a hospital, where he was kept alive for more than 30 hours before dying, according to Star archives.
Witnesses told deputies that Marrufo was driving the Chrysler south on Cardinal from Valencia when the shots were fired.
He then pulled into the parking lot and crashed into a parked vehicle before getting out of the car and collapsing.
Witnesses described a sedan with three people as the vehicle shots were fired from. Anderson said words were exchanged between the shooters and Marrufo and his passenger.
The shooting may have been gang-related, Anderson said. During the investigation detectives learned that Marrufo was a member of or had affiliations with a gang.
No suspects have been identified, Anderson said.
The latest Information: It's possible Marrufo and his passenger may have known the assailants, Anderson said. He encouraged the passenger to come forward and talk to investigators. Anyone with information should contact investigators, he said.
