Gas prices are climbing elsewhere, but Tucson is — or at least was — seeing the lowest gas prices in the country, according to a national survey released Sunday.
Regular gas prices averaged $3.06 a gallon nationwide as the rest of the nation's prices rose about six cents in the last three weeks. Mid-grade was $3.17 and premium was $3.29, said oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg.
The study showed gas prices here for a gallon of regular $2.80. The highest price was in Chicago at $3.46, according to the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 stations nationwide.
In California, the average price for regular was $3.11. The lowest price was in Sacramento at $3.02, while San Francisco had the highest at $3.24.
The Tucson Web site http://www.tucsongasprices .com listed two Arco stations — at South Tucson Boulevard and East Valencia Road and at East Benson Highway at South Park Avenue — as selling the cheapest regular in town, at $2.71 a gallon.
"Yes," Denise Waddy said, looking as pleased as anyone could while pumping gas in 105-degree heat late Sunday afternoon. "That's what I like."
Waddy said one of her friends at work told her about the cheap gas at the Arco station at South Park Avenue and Benson Highway. The Tucson Parks Department worker goes right by the station on her way to and from the city complex at South Park and Ajo Way.
Raúl Villa, gassing up his red Chevy Z-51 pickup, also works in the area, and said he keeps his eye on gas prices.
"I just passed by the Circle K, and it was $2.83," Villa said.
But Phoenix may have already stolen Tucson's cheap gas crown. A Phoenix Web site, http://www.phoenixgasprices.com, reported two Flying J stations in Phoenix were selling regular Sunday afternoon for just $2.65 a gallon.
The Web services use gas prices reported by motorist members to compile their lists.
