![]() Saturday night. Tucson, Ariz. The place to be and to be seen - cruisin' Speedway. Where else? Cruising is a tradition as old as the automobile. And Speedway is just about as old. It began as a dirt strip used for drag racing, hence its name. But, as this photo from July 16, 1977, shows, the road had grown into a busy commercial street, with lots of fast-food joints and parking lots where teens hung out. Racing down Speedway, at that time, was not the thing to do - too many cops. Alternatively, the action was on Swan, Wilmot, Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde roads.
