A Tucson resident, the first person to be charged with felony prostitution in Pima County, pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated prostitution Friday.
Sable Rose Taylor, 45, entered the plea in Pima County Superior Court in return for prosecutors' agreement to dismiss an aggravated prostitution charge against him.
Prosecutors have had the ability to charge anyone convicted of three or more prostitution charges with a felony since November, said defense attorney Matei Tarail.
According to state law, the maximum sentence for first-, second- and third-time offenders is 15, 30 and 60 days in jail, respectively. Someone who is convicted of prostitution three or more times must serve a minimum of 180 days in jail.
Taylor has past convictions for prostitution, drug offenses and indecent exposure, court documents say.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety Web site indicates he is a Level 3 registered sex offender as a result of an indecent-exposure conviction. Those who are at Level 3 are considered the most likely to re-offend.
When Taylor is sentenced, the judge can designate the charge a felony or a misdemeanor. The judge can also place Taylor on probation or sentence him to between four months in jail and up to two years in prison.
At the request of Tarail, Judge Frank Dawley sent Taylor to the Arizona State Hospital in Phoenix a couple of months ago to determine if he was competent to stand trial.
Court documents say Taylor — who wanted to be called "Ms. Taylor" in court — has been diagnosed with gender-identity issues, depressive and mood disorders, an antisocial personality and a personality disorder.
Doctors declared Taylor competent, but Tarail hopes to have Taylor's case transferred to Judge Nanette Warner, who presides over the county's mental-health court.
