A 17-year-old Tucson boy was arrested Sunday night after he shot and killed a friend at an East Side park, a police spokesman said.
Daniel Edward Ramirez, 17, was being held at the Pima County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, said Officer Dallas Wilson, a Tucson Police Department spokes-man.
At 7:24 p.m., officers went to Lincoln Regional Park, 8420 E. Escalante Road, just east of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, in response to a shooting. When they arrived they found Alfredo Valenzuela Jr., 17, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 8:04 p.m., according to police.
Several witnesses remained near the scene after the shooting and detectives learned that six friends had gathered at the park, Wilson said.
The victim brought the gun, detectives learned, and at some point Ramirez handled it and shot Valenzuela, Wilson said. "The victim was shot due to reckless handling of the gun," Wilson said.
Valenzuela was shot once.
Neither the name of the gun's owner nor details about whether anybody else handled the gun were available for release Monday afternoon, Wilson said.
Police sought other witnesses who fled after the shooting, but are no longer looking for any suspects or witnesses, Wilson said.
