Four of six anti-war protesters arrested for blocking the entrance to Raytheon Missile Systems in March have entered a plea agreement.
The four, Gretchen Nielson, Bill Moeller, Patricia Birnie and Jack McPherson, pleaded no contest in Pima County Justice Court to the misdemeanor charge of obstructing a highway in exchange for four other charges being dismissed, said their attorney, Thomas Hippert.
As a result of their plea, the four will have to perform eight hours of community service, Hippert said.
Two other protesters, Scott Kerr and Nancy Gallen, are expected to enter the same plea agreement in January, Hippert said.
According to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, the six defendants were among 15 protesters who blocked Raytheon's entrance at 1115 E. Hermans Road, off Nogales Highway during the noon hour on March 20.
The protesters billed the event as a "citizens' weapons blockade" timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the start of the Iraq war. Defense contractor Raytheon makes the Tomahawk cruise missile.
In a news release distributed before the protest, organizers said they wanted to stop shipments of bombs and missiles.
"We are here today to say no to weapons and no to murder," Gallen, a retired teacher, was quoted as saying in the news release.
The demonstrators, most of whom are in their 60s and 70s, said their actions were part of a larger anti-war effort called the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance Against the War in Iraq.
