Two women and one man from Agua Prieta were arrested in connection with attempts to smuggle marijuana into the country Thursday, an official said Friday.
In all, 364 pounds of marijuana were seized as a result at the Douglas port of entry, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The first attempt occurred at 10:40 a.m. when border officers became suspicious of a 30-year-old woman during routine questioning, the release said. The officers searched the vehicle with the assistance of a drug-detecting dog named Nelo.
Inside, they found 82 pounds of marijuana hidden throughout the vehicle.
About six hours later, officers noticed discrepancies in a GMC pickup truck and decided to conduct a more thorough inspection, the release said. With the help of another drug dog, Bak, the officers found compartments that were built into the truck bed.
Inside, they found 220 pounds of marijuana, the release stated. The driver, a 21-year-old man, was arrested.
The final foiled attempt was at 7:40 p.m. when a 24-year-old woman in a 1989 Ford F-150 came to the port of entry, the release said.
Officers became suspicious of the woman's answers to routine questions, so they enlisted Nelo's help, according to the release. The woman was arrested after the officers found 62 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the truck's seat.
