MESA - Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has apologized for his comment that a Paradise Valley resort would be left with too few employees to operate should all the illegal immigrants working there be rounded up.
McCain singled out the Camelback Inn last Thursday during a news conference in Washington announcing immigration reform legislation he authored with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.
"If we went down to the Camelback Inn today in Phoenix and arrested everyone who's working there illegally, the place would probably shut down," McCain was quoted as saying.
"I did not mean to single out any particular resort in my remarks," McCain said Tuesday. "The legislation we introduced ... is designed to comprehensively address a broken immigration system. The reference to a specific business in my remarks detracts from the intent and import of my comments and this legislation."
Officials with the Camelback Inn said the resort does not employ any illegal immigrants and nearly all 800 of its employees have citizenship or visa documentation on file.
