A man who fell asleep while smoking a cigarette next to a bush suffered burns after the plant caught fire, authorities said.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was sleeping next to a bush behind the Diary Queen near West Ruthrauff Road and North La Cholla Blvd., said Capt. Adam Goldberg, a Northwest Fire District spokesman.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames that were 10-feet wide and 20-feet tall, Goldberg said.
The man, who suffered second and third degree burns, was transported to the Northwest Medical Center and transferred to a Phoenix are burn center, Goldberg said.
