Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.05.2009
A fire Tuesday afternoon near the west gate of Fort Huachuca has burned five houses and injured one person, authorities said.
The blaze quickly spread to about 1,000 acres by Tuesday evening. The fort closed the west gate because of the fire but it has since re-opened.
Firefighters from several agencies are fighting the brush fire, which began at 1 p.m. on private land. It quickly spread to Coronado National Forest land.
The fire also has burned numerous other buildings in the area, said Teresa Ann Ciapusci, a Coronado National Forest spokeswoman. Area residents have been evacuated.
One person suffered burns and was taken from the scene by helicopter, said Laura Sink, a consultant for Sonoita-Elgin Emergency Services. That person’s condition was not immediately known.
The fire is human-caused and is under investigation, according to a Coronado National Forest press release.
There are eight fire engines, up to four heavy tankers and one air tanker being used to fight the fire, the press release stated.
Officials have closed Forest Service Road 827, also known as Cimarron Road, from Arizona 83 to the west gate.
