A 35-year-old woman was found dead Tuesday inside a home near Benson and a man was arrested in connection with the slaying, authorities said.
Cochise County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Alger Hellard, 42, and booked him into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and endangerment, said Carol Capas, a Cochise County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
Sheriff’s deputies received a report of a shooting that happened in Mescal, about 10 miles west of Benson, Capas said.
The deputies arrived and found the woman dead in the home, she said.
There also was a 1-year-old child in the home who was turned over to Child Protective Services, she said.
The woman’s name was not released Wednesday because her family has not been notified, Capas said.
The incident is still under investigation, she said.
