Daniel Fiederlein learned to play foosball when he was 17 at the now defunct Magic Carpet Golf on East Speedway. He was there to play video games, but the head-to-head nature of “table soccer” lured him in. Now 31, Fiederlein is a regular at Main Street Billiards, where he and his friend Jeremy Austin literally own the foosball tables. They split the proceeds with the owners of the East Side bar.
“I’ve played baseball and a little bit of basketball and different things,” says Fiederlein, an electrical engineering technician. “I’ve tried other bar games as well, like pool and things. But this one you can get more aggression out.”
Lots of people all over Tucson are playing bar games that range from old standbys like poker, darts and pool to newer, electronic games like Photo Hunt and Wii Bowling. Beer pong, meanwhile, has moved from dorm rooms to pubs.
For those who crave structure there are leagues. For those who fly by the seat of their pants there are pool and shuffleboard tables just waiting for you and your friends to monopolize them.
Read in this week's edition of Caliente about some local people who are bar-game champions. Applaud them, for great is the athlete who can win a game without losing his (or her) buzz.
