The Arizona State Transportation Board decided today to begin more detailed study of an Interstate 10 bypass that would run west of Tucson through the Avra Valley area.
The new studies will look at the environmental impacts and more specific engineering aspects of a bypass to carry trucks and interstate traffic off of the main interstate through Tucson.
State studies of this and other proposed bypass routes have been underway for nearly two years, as the department investigated whether a bypass was necessary, and which of several options was the most viable.
Now that those ideas have been narrowed to one proposal, the state can get into more detail on a route that could skirt the Tucson Mountain Park, Saguaro National Monument West, and impact the Tucson Mitigation Corridor for wildlife, speakers said at the board’s meeting.
More than 100 audience members clapped, chanted and yelled during the meeting, protesting the board’s decision which was made before the board allowed public comment.
