PHOENIX — The Arizona Republic has laid off 68 employees, while 29 employees accepted voluntary severance.
The Tucson Citizen, was also making cuts, but Jennifer Boice, the paper’s interim editor, declined to discuss the numbers until Thursday.
Republic Publisher John Zidich announced the cuts in an e-mail sent to employees Wednesday.
In the e-mail, Zidich said the cuts are based solely on tough economic conditions facing the country and the owner of both newspapers, Gannett Co.
Gannett announced in October that it would cut about 10 percent of its U.S. community publishing division staff.
Calls to Republic editors were not immediately returned Wednesday.
