ST. JOHNS — An 8-year-old boy accused of killing his father and another man in a rural eastern Arizona community will be allowed to spend Thanksgiving with his biological mother.
Judge Michael Roca on Wednesday agreed to allow the boy to leave juvenile detention from noon on Nov. 26 until noon on Nov. 28. The judge’s decision during a hearing in St. Johns came over the objection of prosecutors.
The boy has been charged in juvenile court with two counts of murder in the Nov. 5 shootings of his father, Vincent Romero, 29, and Timothy Romans, 39, who was renting a room in the family’s home in St. Johns.
Police have said the boy confessed to the shootings and a police video released Tuesday shows the boy telling two investigators that he fired at least two shots at each of the men.
A defense attorney has said police overreached in their questioning of the boy, who was not represented by a family member or lawyer during the interview.
Authorities and the defense attorney will no longer answer questions about the case because of a gag order imposed by the court.
The judge said Wednesday that if the boy doesn’t return to detention on time, arrest warrants will be issued for him and his mother. Roca also ordered that there be no guns or knives in the home while the boy is free.
The boy’s mother, who lives in Mississippi, left the courthouse Wednesday without commenting to reporters.
Until his arrest, the boy was living with his father and stepmother.
