Department of Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff said Friday that he has no plans to continue in his position with the incoming Barack Obama administration.
“My plan is to go on Jan. 20,” said Chertoff at a press conference at the University of Arizona. “I’ve had four good years here.”
He said he’s looking forward to working with his successor and will provide assistance from the outside because he believes in the importance of securing the border and preventing terrorism.
The outgoing secretary spoke on a number of issues including border fences, immigration reform, guest worker programs and the escalating violence in Mexico during a press conference that preceded a lecture he delivered to law students at the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law.
About 75 people protested Chertoff’s visit south of the James E. Rogers building on Speedway. Holding signs that read “Walls don’t work,” “No human being is illegal,” “Get the Chert-off,” and “Chertoff respect the law, no Real ID” the mixture of UA students and Tucson residents said they wanted to show their displeasure with the way Chertoff has handled border security issues.
Many talked about his use of a waiver created in the 2005 Real ID Act that allows the Homeland Security secretary to bypass compliance with federal regulations for border fences and roads. Chertoff used the waiver five times during his tenure, including for three projects in Arizona.
“It’s a good opportunity to show Chertoff that I am one of the people that doesn’t agree with the border wall as a solution to our immigration situation,” said UA law student Mariana Padias.
