PHOENIX — Voter turnout for Tuesday’s presidential election was much lower than the 80 percent state elections officials had predicted.
The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office puts turnout at just 64 percent of the state’s nearly 3 million registered voters. That number may creep up slightly as provisional and other leftover ballots are counted.
State and county election officials had projected voter turnout at 80 to 85 percent because of the historic nature of the presidential race that featured Arizona Sen. John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama.
But voter turnout appeared to be down from 2004 in all except Santa Cruz and Navajo counties.
The 2004 presidential election featuring George W. Bush defeated John Kerry pulled in 77 percent of the state’s voters.
