With the presidential election a month away, a new PBS documentary “Latinos ‘08,” examines how supporters of Barack Obama and John McCain are trying to mobilize Latinos, a group seen as less cohesive than other ethnic voter blocs, according to a statement issued by the producers.
The documentary from Phillip Rodriguez — an award winning Los Angeles filmaker — airs Wednesday, October 8, at 10 p.m. on KUAT.
Former Tucsonan Rodolfo de la Garza, one of the main speakers of the film, explores what it will mean to be Latino in the future, since the ethnic group’s identity and role in national politics is evolving rapidly.
For now, Latinos are the nation’s largest ethnic/racial minority. But with low rates of naturalization and low turnout among those who are naturalized, Latino voters have yet to achieve the level of political participation of other groups.
De la Garza estimates only 58% of elegible Latino voters are registered and eligible to cast a ballot.
The documentary looks at the strategies employed by candidates and advocacy groups as they attempt to mobilize and attract Hispanic voters, from get-out the vote campaings to bilingual blogs to mariachi theme songs.
