A 65-year-old woman whose body was found in a shallow grave in the backyard of a home southwest of Tucson was strangled, and her son is being held in connection with her death.
An autopsy confirmed the identity of Patricia Ann Bynog who was reported missing by her daughter on Saturday.
Bynog’s son — 32-year-old Jacob Isaac Bynog — is now facing a charge of first-degree murder, according to Deputy Dawn Hanke, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
He is being held in the Pima County Jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.
Patricia Bynog was reported missing after her daughter hadn’t heard from her mother for several days, Hanke said. Deputies went to her home in the 8400 block of South Fillmore Road, near Ryan Airfield, but were unable to find her.
The case was then turned over to the homicide unit, Hanke said.
On Monday, investigators went back to the home and were able to obtain a search warrant.
They found a patch of disturbed dirt in the backyard and located Patricia Bynog’s body in the shallow grave around 3 p.m., Hanke said.
Jacob Bynog lived with his mother, Hanke said.
Online court records show that he has been arrested a number of times in the past on charges to include assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal damage, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a corrections officer, prisoner assault with bodily fluids, aggravated assault of a firefighter or EMT, resisting arrest, aggravated DUI, shoplifting, a marijuana violation, disorderly conduct, criminal damage, indecent exposure and threatening.
The Arizona Department of Corrections Web site does not show any record of Bynog having been incarcerated there.
