PHOENIX — A string of Phoenix-area burglaries are tied to five suspects who target mostly retirees, authorities said. Investigators said they expect the number of suspects to increase as the probe widens.
Police have so far recovered $500,000 in stolen goods and were following up with pawn shops for more items, authorities said.
Criminals targeted homes in the Sun Cities, retirement communities in Surprise and residences as far east as Sun Lakes near Chandler, police said.
Among the items stolen were vehicles, guns, jewelry, rare coins and electronic equipment, said Surprise Police Sgt. Greg Welch, a member of the criminal investigations unit.
Burglars focused on homes that appeared vacant and most of the burglaries occurred at homes of winter visitors, many of whom are still unaware they were victimized, Welch said.
So far, only three victims have notified police that they were robbed, but police expect to get more calls as seasonal residents return later this month.
Those arrested include two women and two men. The fifth suspect, whose identity was unavailable, was arrested in west Phoenix last week by sheriff's deputies.
All have been booked on counts of burglary, theft, trafficking in stolen property and conspiracy to commit burglary.
"It's going to be a lengthy investigation for us to wrap up," Welch said.
