Ice skating enthusiasts think they can get a bigger, better ice rink in the Tucson area, and get it sooner, if they don’t ask taxpayers to foot the bill.
The rink still might need some public assistance — perhaps in the form of a lease on county land — but a private developer would build and run the rink.
Last year, a group of parents and coaches that included former Pima County supervisor Mike Boyd asked the county to consider including $4.8 million in a future county bond package for an ice skating rink.
They proposed the rink be built on public land, and they would raise another $1.2 million to supplement the public funding.
The parks and recreation subcommittee of the Bond Advisory Committee recommended the project for a future bond project, but they placed it on the third priority tier of a $425 million set of parks recommendations.
Many of those projects will not make the final cut to be presented to voters.
