Final: Arizona 41, Toledo 16

Arizona tailback Nicolas Grigsby has been the Wildcats’ top offensive threat through the first two weeks of the 2008 season. Imagine what he could do if coaches let him play a full game.
Grigsby rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns in a little more than one half of work as the Wildcats defeated visiting Toledo 41-16 at Arizona Stadium.
Saturday’s win marked a milestone of sorts for the Wildcats’ resurgent program. Arizona hasn’t started 2-0 since 2002; the last time they scored 100-plus points in a two-game span was 1954.
Credit Grigsby, the Wildcats’ resident big-play threat, for keeping defenses honest. The small, speedy tailback gave the Wildcats a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter with a seven-yard run up the middle on a counter play.
His cutback move on a 27-yard touchdown run in the second quarter left the Rockets’ defense chasing him — and gave Arizona a 17-3 lead. Grigsby’s final scoring run came just before halftime.
Arizona was driving deep in Toledo territory when quarterback Willie Tuitama handed Grigsby the ball on a lead draw play. Grigsby went through a duped defense for 11 yards and a touchdown.
And then he disappeared. The Wildcats’ tailback had just two carries in the third quarter before being replaced by true freshman Keola Antolin.
Grigbsy returned in the fourth quarter, shortly after Toledo scored a touchdown to cut the Cats’ lead to 34-16.
It’s hard to imagine Grigsby, a 5-foot-10-inch, 178-pounder from Whittier, Calif., as the most important part of the Air Zona passing attack. But he might be. As the only running back on an otherwise pass-happy team, Grigsby gets frequent opportunities to burn teams while using the element of surprise. He combined for 190 yards of total offense in the Wildcats’ 70-0 win over Idaho last week.
Grigsby set a UA freshman record with 186 yards against Washington State last season, and posted 100-yard games against Stanford and UCLA.
Grigsby has posted two 100-yard games so far this year, though the Wildcats’ schedule is growing in talent and importance and they move closer to Pac-10 play. Arizona will head to New Mexico next week before taking on UCLA at The Rose Bowl in their conference opener.
Extra points:
∫Defensive tackle Lolomana Mikaele and defensive back Mike Turner (suspensions) and tight end Rob Gronkowski (strep throat) missed their second straight games.
∫Freshman Juron Criner (Juron Criner) made his second consecutive start at wide receiver. Tight end A.J. Simmons saw limited playing time.
