Tucson police officers found a surprise late Saturday morning when they went to investigate a burglary call at a South Side home.
The officers discovered an 88 mm artillery shell at a home in the 3700 block of East Dover Stravenue, near East Drexel Road and South Alvernon Way, said Officer Linda Galindo, a police spokeswoman.
Explosives technicians from the police department’s Tactical Support Section were called to the house and neighbors were asked to voluntarily evacuate their homes, Galindo said.
The shell was not live and was believed to be at least 30 years old, she said.
A police officer’s military experience allowed him to recognize the device, she said.
The residents in that neighborhood were let back into their homes just before 3 p.m., she said.
