Severe thunderstorm, flash-flood warnings issued for Tucson

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.28.2008
A severe thunderstorm system capable of producing damaging winds higher than 60 miles per hour has hit the Tucson metro area, the National Weather Service says.
A severe thunderstorm warning and flash-flood warnings are in effect in northeastern Pima County, including Tucson and Marana, and in south central Pinal County.
At 7 p.m., a trained weather spotter in Catalina measured 1.5 inches of rain that had fallen in only 45 minutes, the weather service says.
Doppler radar indicates the heaviest rainfall has fallen between Oro Valley and Catalina on the Tucson area's Northwest Side, and on the East Side east of Houghton Road and in the Redington Pass area.
