Tucson man arrested after chase in which woman was struck by police car

Arizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.28.2008
A Tucson man was arrested following a late-night police chase in which an officer’s vehicle struck a woman who had been a passenger in the man’s car, an official said.
Miles Kaufman, 52, was booked into the Pima County jail following his arrest. He was charged with drug possession, felony fleeing and domestic violence/criminal damage.
The incident began at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when police officers stopped a car at East Third Street and North Columbus Boulevard, according to Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson police spokesman.
The officers learned there was a felony arrest warrant for a drug violation for Kaufman, the driver.
Before officers could take Kaufman into custody, he drove away in the car, Robinson said. A woman passenger remained in the car as Kaufman drove away, he said.
At the intersection of Third and North Alvernon Way, Kaufman made a U-turn. During the U-turn, the passenger for some reason got out of the vehicle and fell to the road, Robinson said.
The pursuing police car struck the woman as she was lying in the road, he said.
The woman was taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
In the 1500 block of North Dodge Boulevard, Kaufman got out of the car and ran away, Robinson said. He was taken into custody a short time later by officers.
According to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Kaufman served time in prison for fraud and drug violations.
