PHOENIX — Quartzsite Mayor Steve Bennett is resigning after failing to resolve accusations that he owes the town more than $170,000 in taxes.
In an official letter sent Wednesday to the Quartzsite Town Council members, Bennett wrote that "due to personal reasons I have decided to resign from my position as mayor."
Bennett requested a partial release of the town's jeopardy sales tax lien placed against his properties at Tuesday night's town hall meeting.
Town Manager and Attorney Dan Field said Bennett ignored a tax audit sent to him in July 2007. The town placed the lien on Bennett's properties the following September.
Bennett, 50, was elected mayor as a write-in candidate on May 20 — receiving 251 of the total 437 votes.
Bennett owns a local business and also a construction contractor. Field said Bennett accumulated the tax debt as he allegedly failed to pay the required sales tax on income received through his construction business.
