A Marine with Tucson ties has died in the war in Iraq.
Cpl. Stewart S. Trejo, 25, died Aug. 7 while supporting combat operations in Anbar province, the Department of Defense reports. Trejo listed his hometown as Whitefish, Mont., but spent his childhood in Mexico and Arizona and has many relatives still in Tucson. He was assigned to Camp Pendleton, in California.
Trejo was one of two Marines killed in a vehicle accident that day. The other was Cpl. Adam T. McKiski, 21, of Cherry Valley, Ill.
Trejo is survived by his wife, Taffie, and their two young children.
According to The Associated Press, Trejo enlisted in the Marine Corps on Nov. 2, 2005 while McKiski enlisted a year earlier. They were artillery systems technicians in a unit based at Camp Pendleton.
Conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have claimed 36 other service members with ties to Tucson and Southern Arizona.
