The math building and an electrical shop on the University of Arizona campus had to be evacuated this morning after a gas line was struck with a back hoe, officials said.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. when a contractor working near the 600 block of North Mountain Avenue struck a four-inch line with the back hoe.
It was not clear how many people were evacuated but it is not believed to be a large number as classes have not resumed and few people are on campus, according to Capt. Norm Carlton, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
No injuries were reported. Southwest Gas turned off the gas at 8:44 a.m. and expects to have service restored by about 10 a.m., according to Russ Vallejo, a company spokesman.
