A sport utility vehicle carrying 19 illegal immigrants rolled over early Thurday morning south of Florence, killing nine people and injuring 10 others.
The single-vehicle incident occurred at 7:45 a.m. on Arizona 79 just north of Tom Mix Monument, located 16 miles south of Florence, said officer Carmen Figueroa, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
A 1998 GMC sport utility vehicle with Mexican license plates was heading north when, for unknown reasons, the SUV ran off the highway and into a nearby wash, before landing on its roof, Figueroa said.
The nine victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The ten injured were taken by helicopter and ground ambulance to Tucson and Phoenix hospitals, she said.
Arizona 79 is closed in both directions as the investigation continues, Figueroa said. Investigators from the Illegal Immigration Prevention & Apprehension Co-op Team are on scene, she said.
The U.S. Border Patrol has also sent agents from Casa Grande to the scene, said Rob Daniels, Tucson Sector spokesman.
The Mexican Consulate staff too is on the scene , said Alejandro Ramos Cardoso, head of the Department of Protection at the Mexican consulate in Tucson.
The medical examiner’s office called the consulate to inform them about the accident, he said.
