A suspect in a liquor store holdup was shot and critically wounded this morning when he ran out of an east Phoenix store and was met by a large number of police officers.
A group of Arizona Department of Public Safety officers was across the street from the store near 16th Street and University for training when someone stopped Thursday morning and said the store was being robbed.
Initial reports indicated that approximately a dozen officers ran to the store as a man came out. A DPS spokesman said at least one officer fired once after apparently feeling threatened.
The suspect, who was wounded in the abdomen, was taken to a hospital with what was described as life-threatening injuries.
