Far be it from a devoted owner of a comic book store to abandon his post — even if it’s to attend a ceremony where he might be honored with an “Oscar of the comic book world.”
Charlie Harris, owner of Charlie’s Comic Books, was nominated for a Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, to be bestowed during the country’s largest comic-industry convention, Comic-Con International.
Most of the Eisner awards, named for comic-book legend Will Eisner, creator of influential series The Spirit, are given to leading comic-book artists and writers. The retailer award honors a store owner who supports “the comics art medium both in the community and within the industry at large,” according to the convention’s Web site.
The Eisner awards, in general, are “like the Oscars of the comic book world,” convention spokesman David Glanzer said in an e-mail.
Harris is among about 25 nominees across the country, Glanzer said.
Harris, who runs his store at 5445 E. 22nd St., near South Craycroft Road, by himself, said he was honored when he received a letter notifying him of his nomination. But he can’t tear himself away from his business long enough to attend the ceremony in San Diego on July 25.
“I don’t know who the heck nominated me,” he said. “I’m really proud to be nominated for this award. It’s a really cool award.”
