More than 1,700 pounds of marijuana was seized Tuesday at a checkpoint in Sonoita, Ariz., from a tractor-trailer.
The discovery was made when Osmin Antonio Alas, 46, approached the inspection area of the checkpoint on State Route 82 in a 1995 Frieghtliner XL.
A Border Patrol K-9 alerted to contraband in the trailer, leading to further inspection, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
It was during that time that agents found several bundles of marijuana covered in laundry soap and hidden among cardboard bails, the release said.
Alas — a naturalized U.S. citizen from El Salvador — was turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration along with the marijuana and the tractor-trailer.
