A U.S. Border Patrol agent was airlifted out of the Huachuca Mountains near Sierra Vista Thursday after being bitten by a rattlesnake.
At 10:15 a.m., the agent called a Border Patrol station to tell them he had puncture wounds in his boots and that his toes were starting to turn discolored, said Rob Daniels, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. He was in the Huachuca Mountains on routine patrol when it occurred, Daniels said.
Authorities launched a rescue effort that included a pair of helicopters. A National Guard helicopter was able to land about one-third of a mile away and an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter flew closer and lifted the agent out in a basket, Daniels said.
They transported the agent to where the National Guard helicopter had landed and transferred him, Daniels said. He was flown to an unknown hospital. His condition is unknown.
